Sterilising Jam jars

If you’re planning to do some jam making make sure you start saving jars, or ask friends to keep empty jars for you. You’ll need more jars than you think, and it’s good to have too many ready, rather than find you’ve run out of jars when you start pouring.

Wash them really well in hot, hot, HOT soapy water, rinse and let them air dry. When you start making your jam or jelly, turn the oven on to 180 C. Place your jars on a baking tray and carefully put them in the hot oven. Leave them there for at least twenty minutes and take them out as you need them.

They’ll be very hot at this stage. You will need oven gloves!

Pour your hot jam in straight away and seal with either a wax disc, a screw top lid, or if using a kilner jar, lower the lid and secure immediately. You want to keep out the air and preserve your jam in a clean, yuk-free jar. And how easy peasy is that?
